Claudio Viotti is a computational and theoretical fluid dynamicist with an educational background in applied mathematics and engineering. His current and past research interests span a number of topics including surface and internal gravity waves, stratified fluid flows, instability and turbulence. His involvement in the MULTIWAVE project focuses on the identification of physical mechanisms leading to spontaneous rogue wave formation in hydrodynamic systems. This research faces several fundamental questions, such as the link between breathing solitons---often regarded as theoretical prototypes for rogue waves in weakly nonlinear systems---and fully nonlinear oceanic rogue waves.
